Hi, I am Shannon Peng.  I am running for the 2016 Edison township Board of Education. Please allow me to introduce myself.

Why I want to do my part –First of all, I have two children enrolled in the Edison public elementary school and making sure they get quality education is very important to me.   Having received my bachelor’s degree in China and working hard to realize my dream of getting Master’s degree from the University of Chicago, I know the power of education and I want the best education possible for all of our children.  Second of all, I pay higher and higher property taxes each year but my home’s property value does not go up much at all.  As with many things, it is not so much the amount of money we invest in education, but how we invest that money.  I want to make sure that our tax money is spent wisely so that we are both investing in our children and helping increase the property values of all of our neighbors, whether or not they have school age children.

My qualification – I have been working as a Senior Software Engineer in Metlife for over nine years, and prior to that, seven years at Lucent Technologies.  My daily job is to reengineer old information systems, identify inefficiencies, and provide solutions. The 16+ years of professional training prepared me with strong analytical and critical thinking skills, as well as collaboration experience with team members and external customers.  With my technical background, I strongly believe I can make a positive contribution to our district in this digital age.  In addition, as an independent candidate, I am at the best position to serve only for the interest of Edison residents and the school district if elected.

My goals – I have been talking regularly with Edison residents.  We share the same concerns such as high property taxes, stagnating housing values, government funding shortage, overcrowded classrooms, as well as issues with regard to school buses, computer usage, aftercare programs, PARCC tests, grouping policies etc.  They are all on my list of priority matters.  You are welcome to contact me with other concerns and ideas that you have – because, at the end of the day, it is the development of our children, and the vitality of the Edison Township within which we all live, that is most important; and that’s why I want to work for Smarter Tax, Better School - Dare to Improve!
